Project 1 Process

The project began with a brainstorming session to think of what concept we wanted to communicate.

The words we chose to use for our animation were “calm” and “turbulent” in the context of mental health.

Initially in our planning, me and Ethan agreed to take a week to come up with ideas for how we want to communicate our concept. Given Ethan’s level of proficiency with digital cinematic software, (and my video software illiteracy) it was decided that he would focus mainly on the “motion,” while I worked on the type.

I began the planning by thinking of how I could use visual qualities in the design of the type.

For the stop motion or physical concepts, I did some word association to think of how I might use juxtaposition of ordinary objects to create a bit of discomfort. My inspiration largely came from Stefan Visan’s instagram page (@visanstefan).

Afterwards, I tried to get a better sense of the contrast between the concepts by comparing orderly relaxing music with irregular energetic music (actually just an excuse to take a break and listen to music).

After that I began to make some hand lettering and thought of ways that the two words could potentially transition. I tried writing with my bad hand, holding the pen from the end (amplified the shakiness of my hands). Once I had some elements that I liked, I vectorized a few of my favourite ones.

I’ve excluded some pages for the sake of simplicity

Me and Ethan had another meeting to share the ideas we had come up with and exchange feedback. In the end we decided on typeface for calm, and irregular hand lettering for turbulent.
